Standards for Radiation Hazard Prevention and Radiation Safety Measures
Radiation Hazard Prevention
Safety Measures
- Rooms where radiation-generating equipment is installed must have radiation levels measured at various locations, in accordance with radiation safety standards.
- Radiation-generating equipment must have an ON/OFF control system with a key lock, and the key must be kept securely, or another equivalent system, in order to prevent unauthorized persons from operating the radiation-generating equipment.
- An ON/OFF switch must be provided to supply electrical power to the equipment.
- Radiation safety monitoring and safety compliance inspections must be carried out according to the specified standards every year, through inspection by the Department of Medical Sciences, and approval must be obtained from the relevant authority for the use of radiation-generating equipment.
- Warning labels and the equipment identification number must be displayed in a clearly visible location on the equipment.
X-ray Radiation Hazard Prevention for Operators (Three Principles)
Radiation hazard prevention for operators follows three principles:
- Distance: Stay as far away from the radiation source as possible.
- Time: Work with radiation for the shortest time possible.
- Shielding: Use radiation shielding equipment to reduce direct radiation exposure.
Guidelines
- Rooms where equipment is installed must be properly designed with shielding to prevent radiation leakage correctly.
- Radiation inspections in every area must be carried out only within the radiation-protected area, except in emergency situations where staff must wear a lead apron every time.
- Stand behind the light field and do not stay in the direction of the direct beam.
- For patients who cannot help themselves, such as children or seriously ill patients, staff should not hold the patient for examination by themselves. Try to use equipment to assist the patient. If it cannot be avoided, allow a relative or accompanying person to hold the patient for examination instead.
- During X-ray examination, the patient should be instructed to hold their breath. If the patient cannot hold their breath, avoid repeating the exposure. Staff must also wear a lead apron.
- Personnel operating radiation equipment must use a personal dosimeter badge, and while performing their duties should undergo blood tests every 3 months, or at least once per year.
